OUR VOICES

HEALTHCARE

UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE

Universal Healthcare is the GOAL

H.R.676- Expanded Medicare for All Act will provide healthcare without cost, therefore eliminating the issues of high co-pays, deductibles and monthly costs. In addition, the sick and elderly will no longer have to worry about the cost of insurance due to preexisting conditions. S.H.A.W. will educate and advocate for universal healthcare until our elected officials understand "Healthcare is a Human Right."

The expansion of Florida Medicaid is the GOAL!

Florida is one of 19 states that chose not to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. The Medicaid expansion will create coverage for more than 500,000 Floridians who are not currently qualified. S.H.A.W. He will advocate for Florida to accept the expansion of Medicaid, which will save more than $ 500 million. We will advocate for the increase in funds that will be used for mental health and substance abuse services.

EDUCATION

College for All - S.806 is the GOAL!!!

S.H.A.W. stands in support of the ability to obtain a college education without debt. About 70 percent of students take out loans to pay for college and owe more than $28,000 by graduation. By supporting S.806, we will provide students the opportunity to attend college and enter their career fields with a clean slate, which will give them the ability to use their credit and loans to enhance stability, instead of dependency.

PRIORITIZE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Making public schools a priority is the OBJECTIVE!

S.H.A.W. He will argue against the fact that the funds are only destined to good private schools. From an increase in teachers' salaries to ensuring that classrooms have adequate supplies, the goal of S.H.A.W. is to ensure that teachers have the tools they need to provide a quality education to our students and ALL students have the same resources to be successful.

INEQUALITY

RACIAL JUSTICE

There are many issues that plague our black and brown communities unlike any other. Racial profiling, the use of excessive force, and the lack of accountability simply name a few. S.H.A.W. stands to initiate the fight against the racial injustice by seeking to require all active-duty law enforcement wear body cameras, by demanding accountability for civil rights violations and the use of excessive force and by eliminating the "Stand Your Ground" law.

END MASS INCARCERATION

S.H.A.W. advocates to ultimately end privatization of prisons. Black people spend two-thirds more time behind bars than their White counterparts. In fact, court decisions show harsher sentencing for our Black and Brown people. S.H.A.W. stands to begin addressing criminal justice reform by supporting bail reform, which impacts whether a person is jailed pretrial. Statistics show the inability to pay bail leads to desperation to be released and acceptance of plea deals.

Fair Pay Act of 2017- H.R. 2095

"Non-Hispanic women are paid 79 cents, Black women 63 cents, and Latina women 54 cents for every dollar paid to White non-Hispanic men. By closing the wage gap, a working woman in this country would be able to afford more than one additional year of tuition and fees for a four-year public university,74 more weeks of food for her family, nearly seven more months of mortgage and utilities payments, or 14 more months of child care," according to the National Partnership for Women and Families. S.H.A.W. stands to close the wage gap by supporting the Fair Pay Act of 2017 (H.R. 2095).
